Every year at this time, we engage in a short retreat on the meditation practice associated with Buddha Amitayus. This special practice is a powerful method for increasing lifespan, good fortune and wisdom.
Our human life is our most precious possession because it gives us the opportunity to improve our happiness continually, ultimately enjoying the supreme happiness of enlightenment, something that animals can never reach. We therefore need a long and healthy life. To ensure we are successful in our efforts, we also need wisdom, and the merit or inner good fortune that enables the growth of spiritual realisations.
Amitayus is the Buddha of long life, merit, and wisdom. By engaging in this practice, we can develop these qualities and eventually attain the deathless state of a Buddha. We can also use this practice to help remove obstacles endangering the lives of others, especially our close friends and family.
